BP Well Is DEAD -Hopefully!

Aug-6-2010 By Barbara Zak

BP, finished pumping cement into its ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, yesterday (Thursday), to seal off the source, of the world’s worst offshore spill.

The cementing operation, took about five hours, and followed earlier injections, of heavy drilling mud this week.  The procedure successfully, subdued the upward pressure of oil and gas, inside the deep-sea Macondo well.  The crippled wellhead, as you may recall, was provisionally capped in mid-July, and successfully stopped, the flow of oil, gushing into the Gulf of Mexico.

This is not the end of what is left to be done, but,  more like the beginning of the end.  It is at least, a positive step, to assure us that NO more oil, will be leaking into the environment.

And Now We Wait!

The critical time period, of 48 hours of observation, has expired on BP’s corked well.  The problem is, no one seems to know, if the geyser is stopped, for good.

The government, has added another day of critical monitoring, being cautiously optimistic.   Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, stated that the  oil giant, was initially given 48 hours, to see whether its latest effort to stop the leak, was working. The cap, has been holding up, with no signs of oil spewing into the Gulf.   However, Allen made the call to extend the trial run, less than two hours, after the period ended Saturday afternoon.

Scientists and engineers, are optimistic, that the well, is showing no obvious signs of any leaks.  However, they are still struggling, to understand pressure readings emerging form the bottom of the Gulf sea floor. They feel, the pressure readings are lower, than they would like to see. Read the rest of this entry »

BP- Can We Believe Them?

Jul-13-2010 By Barbara Zak

The massive Gulf oil spill disaster, has triggered strong reactions from people around the nation, and world.

Most people are saddened  by the situation. The pollution, oil-slicked wildlife, and how it is devastating the livelihood for people in the area, is the main concern.  It still remains  the all consuming, top story in the news.  We are NOW in day 85 , and we really do want to believe, that this new cap will do the job, of finally, plugging the leak.  There has, as you know, been much said, and not much good news or luck , if you will, since the onset, of this horrific mess.

After securing a new, tight-fitting cap on top of the leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico, BP has begun testing today (Tuesday), to see if it will hold and stop, fresh oil from polluting the waters for the first time in nearly three months. Read the rest of this entry »
