Saving Shoes From Landfills

Nov-22-2008 By Barbara Zak

About a year ago, Kent Basson, started OddShoeFinder.com, which allows users to buy and sell their mismatched pairs of shoes. It is aimed at people such as polio survivors who must buy a different pair of shoes for each foot due to severely mismatched feet. A few months after starting the site, he was
contacted by several people about accepting large batches of new name brand single shoes.

He started the site after his sister had an injury (due largely to neuropathy from diabetes) that resulted in her having to wear two different sized shoes. He saw that her options were few unless she wanted to spend a lot of money,or go to Nordstrom.  She still lives in their hometown in Alabama, which is far from a Nordstrom.

Kent ended up with over 11,000 shoes that were otherwise heading for a landfill. “We sorted and posted all the shoes we could as mismatched pairs. Rather than buying two pairs of shoes at retail prices, users of the site can buy a pair of shoes that was headed to the landfill for $10-20/pair.”

“We also found a use for boots for which we did not find matches. Construction workers wear boots in two different brands and styles when they pour concrete so that they don’t ruin their good boots,” Kent said.

A lot of perfectly able people also need mismatched shoes.  It is far more common than ever imagined, although most people just buy the larger pair and deal with it unless the difference is extreme. People born with clubfoot are also likely to need mismatched shoes.

He has also rescued quite a few matching pairs from among the thousands, so people who don’t have the problem of mismatched feet also use the site. He has 3000 skates (inline and ice) and cleats arriving next week, so the hope is that lots of people without serious disabilities will use the site as well.

This is not only a great way to save shoes from ending up in a landfill, but also makes filling this need alot easier, and far more affordable.  What a great way to go green and save some green too!

A friend of mine sent me information on this very important topic.  The tone of the article pertains to pregnant women, but actually it is important information for everyone.  Kristen J. Gough, wrote this very   informative article, in which she shares results from a new study.  The study suggests that cell phones may pose some health risks to a pregnant woman’s developing baby.  But, before you toss your wireless phone, find out exactly what those risks may by clicking here.

What you need to know at the heart of the debate over whether cell phone use can cause health problems—not just in pregnant women but to anyone—is the way wireless devices work. A cell phone uses radio frequency waves, a form of electromagnetic radiation, to transit messages to and from cell towers. For more information about this, check out what the Food and Drug Administration is saying, just click here.

These waves are the same as those your microwave generates to heat food but at a much lower amount. High amounts of these waves can disrupt body tissues—that’s one reason you wear protective shielding when you get an X-ray. Because stronger forms of this radiation, such as that used for X-rays, can be harmful to the body by damaging cells and DNA, it is called ionized radiation. Microwave ovens, cell phones, and other wireless devices also use electromagnetic waves to function, but because the radiation they produce is not thought to damage body tissue, it’s known as non-ionizing. Still, the body absorbs non-ionizing radiation generated from your phone. According to the FDA, which regulates radiation levels in cell phones, the amount of RF energy your body absorbs “is called the Specific Absorption Rate,” or the SAR level.

What concerns researchers, however, is that the long-term effects of cell phone use are still largely unknown. Cell phones may emit low levels of radiation, but does constant, heavy use amplify the effects of the radiation?

Available scientific evidence does not show that any health problems are associated with using wireless phones.  On the other hand, there is no proof, that wireless phones are absolutely safe.  Some studies suggest that some biological effects may occur, but such findings have not been confirmed by additional research.

The technology is simple and readily available. To date there are two billion people worldwide that use wireless phones.

What can you do If you are concerned about the potential hazards of cell phone use on your unborn baby, there are steps you can take to minimize your exposure to radio frequency energy (RF).  First of all, don’t do anything that can interfere with your phones signal strength. The harder your phone has to work the more RF (radio Frequency) energy it is putting out.  Use it according to the manufacturer’s suggestions, just as it came out of the box.  No, rhinestone or rubber sheaths.  Use a blue-tooth whenever possible, and keep the phone away from your body, especially your belly, on a waist-clip or in a pocket. Just a few changes can make a big difference.

What I like about the information above , is that a person can look at one thing and continue researching, if you are interested in knowing more.   Another wonderful and highly recommended source that you can listen to or read, is the Electro Pollution Solution by Dr. Sherrill Sellman.

Barbara’s Ladybug Has A Mall !

Oct-13-2008 By Barbara Zak

That’s right!  She has only been gracing my blog for 96 days, yet she has proven herself to be very welcoming and popular.  She’s been a good luck charm and inspired many green articles, as well as helped me cover everything from the odds of autism, to diet and autism, the gas crisis, and much more.

She is such a wonderful people greeter, that I decided to name my power mall after her.

My Ladybug Mall

Did  you know that 70% of people on-line have a disability?  Many others are looking for ways to make money on-line, supplement their income, or quit their day job.  I took this decision very seriously and searched hard to find the right things to put on my blog.  I think I made the right choice with my power mall.  Soon, there will be other money making ideas showing up here also.

If you’re looking for a business opportunity, I’m so glad because it means you want to change your life. I’m sure you already know how important it is to find that right opportunity. When I started looking for a business I knew that 97% of people who try to find financial freedom through a home-based business fail so I knew whatever I chose had to be different!

There were certain “Givens.”

o It had to be FREE so every person who wanted to change their lives would have a chance.

o It had to be simple.

o It had to take away all the “business games” that kept most people from succeeding in a home-based business.

The “Givens” were answered when I found MY POWER MALL!

I’m not going to take time to explain it because MY POWER MALL has created some powerful movies and a great website that will do just that. I will tell you it is totally new, totally FREE, very simple, and can be done in conjunction with anything else you are doing to generate financial freedom. You could easily be making $4 – 6000 a month, but your income potential is unlimited. Interested?

Click the widget, here at the top right of the inner sidebar, that says earn income! Then click on the 3 different widgets, and watch the videos, to determine which program is best for you. It will only take a few minutes to determine if our FREE program is what you have been looking for. I believe it is!
