When Green Turns Black
Both Oregon and Washington, have a reputation, of being and promoting the “green lifestyle.” Portland, Oregon, takes pride in their mass transit program, and continually proves, that large cities, can reduce their carbon footprints. That all changed recently, and the green future, has taken a step back into the past. It now appears, black as coal.
Cowlitz County,Washington, across the the Columbia River from, Portland,Oregon, has approved construction, of a coal export terminal. The facility, will export millions of tons, of U.S. coal to Asia, well in particular, China, yearly.
I find it ironic, the same coal, that fueled our Industrial Revolution, is still a crucial source of energy, especially in developing nations. Just, in the last eight years, it has become the world’s fastest growing fuel, and in the last five years, it has doubled in price.
Did you know, there are 6 billion tons of coal burned annually, and half of that, is burned in China? The United States, China, India and Russia, have 60% of the world’s coal reserves, and collectively these, countries house 40% of the world’s population.
To me, there is something terribly wrong with this picture. It goes against everything, we were trying to accomplish, in terms of a clean and green environment. Never mind, the world summits, on Climate Change, and globally, supposing to reduce the carbon footprint, as well as reduce carbon emissions. Hello, isn’t this like exploiting and exporting, global warming? The entire planet is effected by a global black cloud, that will continue to pollute, and cause severe weather patterns. Will, there even be a planet to care for, or a future, to pass on to our children, and grandchildren? It all comes down to , growth, greed and money.
Yes, the economy needs a boost, and yes, most countries need to export more goods, but, where do we draw the line?
Joining us, in the building of the Cowlitz facility, are two companies from Australia. One of which will help build the terminal, and another, also promising to supply Chinese power plants, with Australian coal.
China, has enormous coal reserves, but, they are inland, and far from their cities and factories. So, they export their lower grade coal, in exchange for, American and Australian coal.
Within another 15 years, China will have approximately 350 million people, living in new cities, that currently, do not exist. What will fuel and power these cities? More than likely, black coal. Clean, green and renewable energy, seems to be falling by the wayside, of supply and demand, even if it is dirty energy!
