See How Much Has Changed In 200 Years!
Filed under: Education; Tagged as: countries of the world, hans rosling, income per person, life expectancy, present day19 CommentsGapminder, is now able to visually show us how much the world has changed in both life expectancy, and income per person, over the last 200 years. Hans Rosling, shows us how all the countries of the world, have developed since 1809 to the present day.
I found this to be both fascinating and informative, as well as quite eye-opening! I hope you enjoy!

Hmm looking at the video closely, I see that it’s only the bare statistics that are shown (which is to be expected). However, I think it’s a giant leap for viewers (and Rosling, as well) to make conclusions from this raw data. For example, there is no “why” given as to the rise of such countries as China and India in income and health. We know through history that after WW2, life expectancy rose because there were no more wars on a large scale. And the income of those countries (esp. Middle Eastern countries) rose dramatically because of the efforts of countries such as the US, UK, and France (oil). The Western countries shared their wealth and technology which gave rise to increased longevity, nutrition, income, and etc. But such things are impossible to discern by looking at raw data such as in the study. Not to mention that the raw data relies solely on information that was *hopefully* accurate and complete at the time and presently…
Still, it’s a remarkable study. Thanks for posting! I will have to check out the website.

@ Rebecca,
You are so welcome!

Yes, you are correct about the raw data. Like yourself, I still think it is a remarkable
and fascinating study. One thing I think is abundantly clear, along with the longevity factor,
is how much the global population has exploded!

This is really an outstanding video and the perspective that we get about the development over they last 2 centuries is truly eye opening. It is rarely that we come across such helpful statistics explained in such a lucid manner. Great post. We run a global sustainability directory called Climatarians where we list websites and blogs that talk about environmental issues.

@ Climatarians/J. Hoogstrate
I’m glad you enjoyed the post. I will take a closer look at joining your directory!

I’m always fascinated with these studies and I haven’t seen this one before. It’s scary for me to think what it might be like in our world in just 20 or more years which I hope I will get to see for myself since we are living so much longer. Have a great Thanksgiving.

@ A. @ A Changing Life,
Yes, I agree. I enjoy listening to him, and he always impacts my thinking on the topic he engages in.
I would say, that makes him an “effective” speaker!

Very nice, Barbara.
A good graphic is always helpful in explaining a concept or presenting data. This one does an outstanding job.
Keep up to the good work and congratulations on your SECOND award!

Hello everyone, it’s Thanksgiving Day! I’m enjoying my extra day off, and I am planning to make something fun that’ll probably involve a car trip and seeing something new in Golden Valley I haven’t seen yet.
You write something new at Thanksgiving? -
@ Brad,
Thank-You very much times 3!

@ Bedell Dan,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I hope you enjoyed the video, and
the one for Thanksgiving too! Hope to see you here again!

I often wonder if living longer is a good thing when so many of us are plagued with illnesses and lose our independence. It’s not like it used to be when extended family lived together. You’re more likely to be placed in a nursing home now.
