Facts On Ladybugs
Filed under: Nature, green living, ladybugs; Tagged as: Aphid, Biology, Bird, Coccinellidae, commonality, create, Flora and Fauna, Garden, Gardens, ladybug, ladybugs, Predation, severity, Species, temperatures, time, wikipedia, wonder21 CommentsLadybugs are also known as ladybirds. They are not just considered one ladybug, but a family of them. There are nearly 5,000 different species of ladybugs, of which more than 400 species are common in North America.
In her lifetime, (usually several months) a female ladybug will lay more than 1,000 eggs. The male ladybug is slightly smaller than the female. As they age, their spots fade. Under the right conditions , the Asian Lady Beetle, can have a lifespan of 2-3 years.

When they fly, they beat their wings on an average of 85 times per second. However, they won’t fly if the temperature is below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. They also, don’t like being in direct sunlight and hot temperatures.
It has been said that ladybugs stink. This is because, if they sense that they are in danger, they can create a chemical smell that both stinks and tastes terrible, so that birds and other predators won’t eat them. Pretty smart for a little bug.
Their favorite food is aphids, of which they will eat more than 5,000 in their lifetime. No wonder they are so valuable to your garden. They chew their food from side to side.
It has been said that Red Ladybugs are a symbol of “luck.” Fact is, we are the “lucky” ones, when ladybugs show up in our gardens and eat our unwanted garden pests!

Hi Sadie,
Well, I’m sorry she’s afraid of them. I don’t think there is anything to be afraid of!

I learned a lot about ladybugs thanks to you. They are one insect that I’m not afraid of and love to hold or catch (of course I let them fly away). I do remember about the number of spots telling their age.

Like most birds, aren’t the male ladybugs more colorful than the female? We have lots of yellow and black lady bugs in our area.

@ ConnieFoggles,
Thank-You!! I love it when people can learn something new, especially if I’m the source of info. Then I’m doing what I set out to do…give people information they can use!

@ Corrin,
Not in this case. Of course the red ladybugs are the most colorful. But, in the case of ladybugs, even the males can be the same color, and lovely like the females, but the females, are bigger! HA…women rule… in a ladybug world!

Well now, this explains a lot. Now I know why I have 240 of the 400 species of ladybugs. LOL…Well, actually, I only have 2 species but LOTS of ladybugs. I have red and yellow. As a child, I learned the saying, “Ladybug, Ladybug, fly away home, your house is on fire and your children will burn”. I NEVER understood that and thought it was so sad. We also were taught to never kill them because they were good to have in the garden. BUT, my camper would be FULL of them when I’d open it up in the Spring. Most of them were dead. Suppose they went in for the winter? But, sometimes I’d miss a couple and they’d be in my bed! AND, they DO bite if you lie on one of them! LOL

@ Judy,
Well, you’re lucky your garden is well protected. Yes, they do hibernate in the winter in cracks, crevaces, (and campers)…somewhere dry.
I also, just learned form you not to lie on them! LOL!!

I adore ladybugs! We’ve got a swimming pool, and I’m constantly rescuing them – hardy little souls thankfully! I think they are adorable, and just about (not positively) the only “bug” I’m not freaked out about LOL!
