Wednesday April 22, 2009 was the 39th Earth Day.  It always revitalizes my goal of treating everyday as if it IS Earth Day.  I think of “green” as an action and success color.  To me green symbolizes earth, nature, and life.   Especially, during Spring season, green IS life in abundance.  It signifies a renewal of life, health and the environment, while evoking a sense of calm, balance, harmony and stability.

My goal is to share with you ways to become Earth conscious, energy smart and optimally healthy.  So, when the following segment crossed my desk the other day, I felt compelled to share it with you.

Richgail Enriquez is a video journalist for Current TV and San Francisco IAM.

She  recently did a story on a neighborhood in the  SF Bay Area, where people
call a center to harvest their extra fruits and vegetables from their
backyards. The donations go to the needy and low income families.
People who signed up to participate get a tax deduction. The program is called:

    “Gifts from Our Gardens”

Check in your local area to see if such a program exists or how, you may be able to  create one. Perhaps, you could even start a community garden.  Another way to help, is by donating to your local food bank, or shopping at Farmer’s Markets.

Here’s another story she  did on SF Bay area youth involvement in the “green” movement.

Here, also is another one of my favorite sites from National Geographic.  It is the “Green Guide to Everyday Living”.  I hope you find this information as inspirational and helpful in your quest to live “green” as I do.  Here’s to working toward a better tomorrow!

  1. I was actually disappointed that Earth Day coverage this year seemed muted. I hope with the 40th anniversary next year there is additional press coverage.

  2. Hi Mark,

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, It seems Earth Hour got more attention than Earth Day. That’s why we need to teat every day like it is Earth Day. Every little bit helps.

  3. I agree, we need to be in “earth day mode” all the time.

  5. I didn’t hear a peep about Earth Day in our area. Big difference from 15 years ago when we used to go to big rally’s downtown and have field day at school.

  6. Hi corrin,

Several people have said that to me this year. Seems, Earth Hour did much better. Well, I guess we need to treat every day like Earth Day, and hope for a super 40th! In the meantime, we can all work toward a better tomorrow!

  7. If I wasn’t a blogger, I would not have heard about earth day at all. Very sad.

  8. Maybe we need to combine these two days into one …. let’s hear it …. Earth Hour Days!

  9. Hi Karen,

I know. That seems to be the case this year. Here’s hoping the 40th will be much better!

  10. Hi Linda,

You’ve got my vote!! Let’s do it everyday…Well, at least those two to celebrate. It was a little disappointing and sad, that there wasn’t much coverage this year. Didn’t hear much about it. At least, we tried to keep the spirit alive!

  11. earth day hardly got any attention here in our county. only two cities had cleanups.

  12. Our city had the great American cleanup. Last year they also had a hazardous waste disposal day around Earth day but this year they didn’t. I try to live everyday like Earth day, too.

  17. I really like the idea of sharing fruits and vegetables from the garden. I remember all the zucchinis I used to grow – and would have loved to have had people to give them to!

  18. Hi cady,

I know ..it was sad. Seems like it was left up to us to observe it on an individual basis, if we were so inclined!

  19. Hi Lynn,

It’s good to know that some places made it a priority. Nice of you to stop by and comment. It’s nice to know that there are plenty of like minded people, such as yourself, that feel everyday should be considered an Earth Day!

  20. Hi vein,

Thanks for letting me know. After I saw your comment and checked. I was surprised, everything was fine in the evening. I don’t know what happened..but is fine now!

  21. Hi Diane,

Well, that’s three of us now. I guess Linda and I will have to put our heads together for next year and make sure it gets the attention it deserves. :)

  22. Hi Solo Ad Explosion,

    Yes, I’m counting on it!

  23. Hi Scott,

I think some of the larger cities participated more…but, hopefully next year will be better everywhere!

  24. Hi Heather,

I agree with you. I don’t know how it is in your area, but some of the larger farms used to let people come in an glean. I think this is similar only, they are sure to get to people in need!

  25. I have said it before, I didnt even know about Earth day. Well I knew you had to turn the lights off for an hour but I was out at the time so I had no say. I agree with Mark’s comment I hope to hear more coverage next year.

Yes, this year the coverage of Earth Day was kinda sad…not much about it! :(

  27. Great Earth Day post!! Yes, if we all just did a bit everyday, it would lead to a greener Earth! Our city didn’t do anything either! Thanks for sharing!
