By now you’ve probably heard the comments made last week by radio talk show host Michael Savage. He caused outrage across the nation about his comments on autism, stating that it is a “racket” and a “fraud. Here is the video in case you missed it.

Unless you have a child with autism, or are a caregiver that works with this population, you just can’t know the tremendous amount of time, love and devotion that is necessary to deal with this disorder 24/7. While I don’t at all agree with Mr. Savages comments about autistic children being “brats” or ” idiots”, he certainly caused a furor that bought too much attention to him, and an even greater awareness of how huge autism is. At About.com is an article from a different perspective on what Mr. Savage may have done for autism.

    Read about that here.

When it come to autism, it is doubtful that it is misdiagnosed, under diagnosed, or over diagnosed. The truth is that 1 out of every 150 children are diagnosed with some form of the disorder. These are pretty alarming statistics for a disorder that varies so greatly in its severity, and has no cure.  Or society has been led to believe by the medical community and pharmaceutical companies, that there is a pill for everything. Well, there is no “magic” pill for autism. With this thought in mind, it is possible that many people, adults and children alike are over medicated, no matter what their ailment  or diagnosis is.

  1. And then Mr. Savages has the audacity to say his statments were taken out of context?

It looks like though out this negativity a little bit of positive came out of it, that people came out to speak and protest bringing more awareness :)

  2. Yes, O.D.
You are exactly right. It was not my attempt to give Mr. Savage more attention here. The more that people in the know, speak out on this topic and make their voices heard the better for autism awareness!
So, Mr. Savage did get a lot of people talking and his show has been dropped in some cities. What goes around comes around!

  3. What a shame for that Savage to say that autistic children are brats and idiots! How dare he say that. I hope and pray that autism does not run in his family so he can experience first hand what this disease really is and what parents go through when they have an autistic child. He ought to be a shame of himself and in my book he is the ‘idiot’ not autistic children.

  4. Hi Diana,

You are absolutely right..He’s the idiot, and yes he should be ashamed of himself, but he always sticks by his word ! I don’t think too many people are listening to him now…

  5. Hi H R U? good blog, i m from bali, good luck

  6. I’ve never heard of Michael Savage but would dearly love to meet him. He would be very welcome to spend a weekend with my family and I can guarantee he’d be apologising for his total ignorance for the rest of his life!

I have no doubt that he feels equally strongly that a child with a deformed leg is lazy and needs to try harder to run a sub 10 sec 100 meters!!

I find it amazing that certain people, who really ought to know better, are so poorly researched and base much of the drivel that emanates from their mouths on their own twisted prejudices.

  7. Hi Surya,

Thanks for the comment and stopping by for a visit. How are things in Bali?

  8. Hi Mark,

I couldn’t agree with you more ! He is a radio talk show host that likes to make noise…only this time he barked up the wrong tree!

  9. This guy should be tarred and feathered or at least put duck tape on his mouth. What a completely disgusting excuse for a human being. Autism is linked to the chemcials in vaccines which just so happen to be full of mercury which damages not only the immune system but functioning of the brain. Maybe we should vaccinate this guy also.
Great post Barb. I am researching the damage vaccines do to pets as well, this is a drug crazy world and we have to stop it.

  10. Hi Teri,

Very well said. I agree with you completely!

  11. Hey Barbara!

Cool! I can see what I’m typing now. No more excuses for typos! :)

Although I am a conservative and have on occasion listened to Savage, he’s really a bit much for me most of the time.

In this case, he’s just flat wrong and his runny mouth has gotten him in trouble.

Thank you for the good work you, I’m sure, are doing with your autistic client. I’ve had a little experience with autism and it’s no easy condition with which to deal.

    Keep up the good work!

  12. Hi Brad,

YA! No more excuses for typos or not stopping by..(ha-ha)! I don’t listen to Mr. Savage ever because of his runny mouth. But in this case, and given what I do working with autistic adults…his unjustified rant did stir quite a commotion and got around the autistic communities in this nation real quickly. I’m sure glad what goes around comes around, and it did get back around to him. Many cities and big corporations that sponsered him have dropped his show…Gee darn(NOT)!

  13. Savage, like Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and the rest of their ilk, have made themselves very, very wealthy by tapping into the most wounded parts of their listeners’ psyches and, rather than attempting to heal, rubbing in a bit of salt while pointing the anger that results toward the defenseless. Contrary to what others here have said, I don’t think ignorance is his problem, nor is it for the other voices of hate on talk radio. These people are smart and know exactly what they’re doing. The trouble is that they don’t care who they hurt, as long as it brings in the profits.

  14. Hi YogaforCynics,

Very well said, and I totally agree with you..No they don’t care who they hurt, so long is their pockets get filled!
